If there’s a centerpiece to the San Jose Jazz Summer Fest 2015, it might be trumpeter Etienne Charles’ “San Jose Suite” (3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 8, California Theatre Stage). Charles’ world-premiere commission is said to reflect San Jose, Calif., and San Jose, Puerto Rico, as well as his hometown of St. Joseph, Trinidad. (Also: Charles & Creole Soul, 6 p.m. Saturday, Umpqua Bank Stage.)
On the buzz front, saxophonist and Flying Lotus collaborator Kamasi Washington leads two projects — the Next Step (noon Sunday, Aug. 9, Kaiser Permanente Main Stage) and the West Coast Get Down (7 p.m. Sunday, California Theatre Stage). Double bassist-vocalist Katie Thiroux (7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 7, San Pedro Market) leads a fun quartet on opening night.
Also noteworthy: bands led by drummers Terri Lyn Carrington (featuring vocalist Ledisi, 6 p.m. Saturday, Kaiser Permanente Main Stage) and Sylvia Cuenca (featuring saxophonist Teodross Avery, 1 p.m. Saturday, RBC Silicon Valley Stage).
